On Spinning
When I was at SPA a couple of weeks ago I met Kelly. She is a friend of Julia's and now, by extension and familiarity, a friend of mine. And she offered up one of my favorite quotes of the weekend.
You see, someone watching me spinning said, "What are you going to make with that?" (They meant what was I going to knit with the yarn I was spinning.) And I said, "I dunno." (I'm a wonder with words, aren't I?) It was then that Kelly said to me, "just say what I always say: I made yarn. Isn't that enough?"
I love it. Because, while I do love knitting with my handspun, sometimes it's just enough to have made yarn. Of course, you have to say it with a bit of a snarky attitude to get the right effect. I'm pretty good at the snark thing, you know. And so . . .
I made singles.

Cross Patch Creations Totally Tubular
And I made barber-poley plied yarn.

Spunky Eclectic Corriedale Party Dress
And I made silk blend yarn.

Cross Patch Creations Signature Blend, Tears of Fire
I made yarn. Isn't that enough?

Totally! Great spinning too btw.

YES. I love your singles - I always ply my yarn, but I admire others who can spin such even, healthy singles that can be left as they are. One day...
Posted by: DebbieB at March 6, 2008 7:11 AM
It sure is. Especially that last one. (You knew I'd drool over that last one, didn't you?)
Posted by: Lucia at March 6, 2008 7:11 AM
I love that blue and white skein! gorgeous!
Posted by: britt at March 6, 2008 7:15 AM
It is. Lovely.
Posted by: Kathy at March 6, 2008 7:16 AM
Yes. Yes it is.
Posted by: Ruth at March 6, 2008 7:20 AM
Oh it is definitely enough! They are all gorgeous - makes me want to pull out the wheel right now! My kids don't really need to get to school this morning do they?
Posted by: Kirsten at March 6, 2008 7:30 AM
Yes, it is enough...but it could be more, too.
Gorgeous and they'd look fabulous made up into something, anything...if you choose.
Posted by: margene at March 6, 2008 7:40 AM
They're gorgeous.....I'd say they are worthy of the work of art stash status, and then if you ever decided to knit them they'd be beautiful too. There are skeins though that are sometimes just so pretty to look at. Nice work!
Posted by: Cynthia at March 6, 2008 8:00 AM
It certainly is more than enough - gorgeous! And if you ever want to unload that Tears of Fire...
Posted by: Kathleen Fivel at March 6, 2008 8:05 AM
The yarn is beautiful! I'm drawn to the first skein. I was sitting next to Julie (Noolie) at SPA and asked her the same thing. Her (snarky) reply was: "Yarn!"
Posted by: Brenda at March 6, 2008 8:11 AM
Yarn is enough. If you find something you want to knit or crochet with it later, that's just a bonus!
I do like those Cross Patch colors.
Posted by: Elizabeth at March 6, 2008 8:15 AM
It's enough as far as I'm concerned! Beautiful!
Posted by: marianne at March 6, 2008 8:16 AM
Totally amazing yarn! The silk blend is beautiful.
Posted by: Karen at March 6, 2008 8:25 AM
You have been busy! Why it certainly is enough :-)
Posted by: Kim at March 6, 2008 8:28 AM
Beautifully spun! Stash them away until the day they will be beautifully knit.
Posted by: Wool Winder at March 6, 2008 8:30 AM
That is SO enough. You made gorgeous yarn. Don't you love Kelly? She has converted another to the ways of yarn making as of last nights spin group, our lovely hostess can now make yarn - hooray!
Posted by: PumpkinMama at March 6, 2008 8:39 AM
Oh yes, that's definitely enough. :) It's all beautiful! By the way, I'm taking my first spinning classes over the next two weeks. Soon I'll be able to make yarn, too (hopefully!).
Posted by: Beth at March 6, 2008 8:45 AM
Of course! And it's gorgeous!
(especially the silk!)
(((hugs)))
Posted by: Knitnana at March 6, 2008 8:51 AM
I think it's enough! But then that's what I keep saying about the stuff I've spun!
Posted by: Deb at March 6, 2008 8:51 AM
It IS enough. And lovely yarn(s) it is, too!
Posted by: Norma at March 6, 2008 9:03 AM
Actually, I would say MORE than enough. Those are beautiful!!
Posted by: Anne at March 6, 2008 9:03 AM
Of course it's enough. It's fabulous. I really like that first, blue and white yarn. Very pretty.
Posted by: Hillary at March 6, 2008 9:14 AM
Funny, I was asked what I was going to make with what I was spinning, and my answer was "Yarn". I have since made a decision as to what to make with that particular yarn, but it IS enough to just make yarn; that's an FO in my book :)
Your yarn is beautiful!

Ooops, didn't mean to post that twice, sorry.
p.s. I just read back through your comments and see that Brenda already told you about my answer :-)
Posted by: Julie at March 6, 2008 9:27 AM
Wow! How cool is that! you made YARN!
I wish I could make decent yarn. I make... er, stuff, stringy sort of mixedly spun (some over, some under, some just right) stuff. Still not useful for anything at all.... and not quite good enough to say "I made yarn".
It's TOTALLY enough to say "I made Yarn!"
P.S. Not only that, but you made PRETTY yarn!
Posted by: Helen at March 6, 2008 9:43 AM
I can totally picture Kelly saying that! (PS - Your yarn is beautiful...) I'm thinking of finding a really nice, really large glass bowl for my living room and throwing all my 4 ounce skeins in there. Then I can make decorative yarn!
Posted by: Danielle at March 6, 2008 9:50 AM
LOVE the colors in that first skein! Beautiful yarn!
Posted by: jessica~ at March 6, 2008 9:52 AM
Yes, and so many yarns look so much prettier just as yarn than knit into something. Artwork in themselves.
Posted by: Cheryl S. at March 6, 2008 10:08 AM
It enough alright. Your yarn is gorgeous!
Posted by: Karen at March 6, 2008 10:08 AM
Beautiful! I'm spinning silk right now that will never be knit. I'm thinking of skeining it and putting it in a shadow box.
Posted by: Stacey at March 6, 2008 10:31 AM
Not only did you make yarn, but you made yourself feel happy. And me, too, by posting that Tears of Fire picture. WOW is that pretty! :-)
Posted by: Beth S. at March 6, 2008 11:12 AM
Absolutely it is.
Posted by: JessaLu at March 6, 2008 11:16 AM
i think it is. i love the singles. i love all of them but i especially love the singles.
Posted by: maryse at March 6, 2008 11:31 AM
It certainly is. Your singles are Noroesque. What? It is SO a word!
Posted by: elizabeth at March 6, 2008 12:00 PM
The yarn is beautful, Carole. I especially like the first one.
Posted by: Jenny at March 6, 2008 12:10 PM
Yes it is! Plus anytime I spin with a plan it never works out it seems. Attempted sock yarns become bulkies, 2 ply worsted weights become lace, etc. I'm learning to just go with the flow :)
They are all beautiful - but I think the Cross Patch singles are my favorite.
Posted by: michelle at March 6, 2008 12:12 PM
Honey, that's not just yarn. It's beautiful yarn.
Posted by: Cookie at March 6, 2008 12:12 PM
And, you make beautiful yarn! Which is more than enough!
Posted by: Sara at March 6, 2008 12:34 PM
And it looks like you made beautiful yarn at that!
Posted by: Lisa at March 6, 2008 12:43 PM
Oooooh, I like making yarn!! LOVE what you made!!
Posted by: Robin in VA at March 6, 2008 1:24 PM
Yup. Someday I'll make yarn too.
Posted by: Kat at March 6, 2008 1:31 PM
That's a PERFECT answer. I love it!
And, of course, your spinning looks great, too....
Posted by: --Deb at March 6, 2008 2:34 PM
Making yarn is awesome!
Posted by: Sarah at March 6, 2008 2:50 PM
Whoa! 'Tears of Fire' is amazing.
Posted by: Ina at March 6, 2008 2:51 PM
Absolutely! What a great comeback. When people ask me why I knit ... I say "because I can". I'm a bit snarky myself at times.
I'm coveting your handspun. I keep meaning to ask you. Do you have any recommendations for where I can purchase good fiber for a good price online?
Posted by: ~Kristie at March 6, 2008 3:22 PM
yeah, it is enough. even more so because it's pretty yarn. the cross patch is my favorite.
Posted by: heather at March 6, 2008 3:55 PM
Nice comeback. Yes, I think yarn is an end-all product itself. All your yarn is beautiful but the silk blend is gorgeous and the barber-poley stuff makes me grin.
Posted by: BigAlice at March 6, 2008 4:15 PM
So cool! That's EXACTLY what I said last night!
Posted by: theLady at March 6, 2008 4:39 PM
yummy!
i love that quote. i've gotten that question a lot since i got my wheel.
i want to try singles - anything special i have to do like spin it tighter initially?
Posted by: elizabeth at March 6, 2008 4:42 PM
So pretty! Certainly yarn is enough, but paradoxically, one can never have enough yarn. It's a mystery.
Posted by: Micki at March 6, 2008 4:44 PM
Wow! Carole. They are all GORGEOUS!! You most certainly did do enough.
; )
Posted by: Vicki at March 6, 2008 5:00 PM
::sigh:: One of these days, *I'm* gonna learn how to make yarn. And yes, that's enough.
(I was just thinking about all of the ways one could say that. Snarky works, but then again, a 'blink...blink...' followed by an oh-so-innocent "I made yarn...?..." can put folks in their place, too. Or at the very least, make 'em squirm!)
It's all so beautiful!
Posted by: Chris H at March 6, 2008 6:16 PM
You're exactly right, which is why I put my rovings on Ravelry and then move them to "all used up" once they've become yarn. Then the yarn is in the stash and if/when I knit with it then IT will move to "all used up." Perhaps it messes with the stash numbers but I'm not worrying about that.
Because making yarn is pretty damn cool all by itself.
Posted by: Alarming Female at March 6, 2008 8:13 PM
Yes, it certainly IS enough, and more than most people will ever attempt:) Glad you are getting lots of spinning in!
Posted by: Birdsong at March 6, 2008 8:30 PM
I agree, it is definitely enough. I love that first yarn, so pretty.
Posted by: Wanda at March 6, 2008 10:58 PM
No, it's not enough. Now you need to make MORE yarn. That's why it's called a fiber addiction, after all!
Posted by: michaele at March 7, 2008 8:17 AM
how sweet it is.
you did all that at SPA?
they are lovely.
Posted by: Teyani at March 7, 2008 10:08 AM
Absolutely. Very nice indeed.
Posted by: Rachel H at March 7, 2008 10:16 PM
MORE than enough! Those are all gorgeous, though that middle one, *party dress* is killing me, Carole.
Posted by: Jan at March 8, 2008 11:42 AM
Beautiful yarn. I have a hard time spinning without a goal in mind, but it brings such pleasure I don't know why it bothers me.
Posted by: jessie at March 10, 2008 6:07 AM
The Cross Patch stuff is fun, isn't it? I've got the Totally Tubular on my wheel right now...
