Spooky Food
Dinner at our house on Halloween is always American Chop Suey. This started back when I was little. My mom made it for us because it was the one thing she knew we would all eat, no matter how anxious we were to get out and go trick or treating. Hannah has grown up having this for dinner on Halloween so we're now second generation into this little tradition and I'm guessing she'll continue it with her own family some day. It's good stuff. And it's not goulash, no matter what Norma says. Right, Sandy?
But anyway. The problem with this dinner is that I don't get to have fun with a Halloween themed dinner. So, last Monday night at our weekly family dinner, I got a bit, errr, creative.

While the kids decorated cupcakes with seasonal sprinkles . . .

I made Witches Hands, Moldy Maggot Casserole, Booger Biscuits and Giants Toes.
Okay, it was really just oven baked chicken that I flattened and cut into "fingers," a rice and spinach casserole, biscuits with sauteed scallions and then tinted with green food coloring, and baby carrots. The recipes came from here and I have to say that the rice was really really good.
It was delicious and fun and my family really got a kick out of it.

The pumpkintinis weren't bad, either.

That looks like a fun meal. I'm glad to hear it was tasty too.

Yum!
Bean and I were trying to gross each other out yesterday. I should have known better than to play that game with a five-year-old. I told her I was going to put green boogers on her and she looked at me and said, "Oh, Mom, boogers aren't green. They're sort of this goldy brown color." Ahem.
And now we have more candy than anyone should eat in a year. We went with a friend and good heavens but they dole it out in her neighborhood. None of this fun size stuff, either.

Great looking dinner, doesn't sound very appetizing though ;-) Pumpkintini's on the other hand sound yummy.
Of course it's not goulash; Norma's just silly!

Was anyone grossed out by the booger biscuits? I would have have trouble eating them, but the hands, toes and mold look pretty good. You get extra points for such a fun meal!

As soon as I saw the cupcakes, I wanted to be a kid over at your house. And pumpkintinis? Can both my inner child and I stop by to play?

Mmmm, I remember lots of American Chop Suey from my childhood. I think my mom put some cheese in hers too. (Or maybe that was the baked macaroni that I'm thinking of ... so many meals with such similar ingredients!)

I see I am not alone in the curiosity about the pumpkintinis. I'm a little obsessed with pumpkin AND martinis!
Posted by: Marlena at November 1, 2007 9:28 PM
Oh my god, "moldy maggot casserole" is something I'll never get out of my head ever, no matter how I try. Thank you for that.
Also, I can't believe it has been over a year since your original American Chop Suey post -- where does the time go???
Posted by: Rachel at November 2, 2007 10:23 PM
oooohhh pumpkintinis! They sound yummy!
Posted by: JessaLu at November 2, 2007 10:34 PM
Yummy, yummy. The pumpkintinis sound divine. Recipe?

We had the same hotdish as a kid and I make it for my daughter occasionally, only we use tomato soup and a can of alphabet soup. I have never heard it called American Chop Suey. I'm guessing that is a never-ending debate.

I came over here from Claudia's Blog, and just have to second (or more) the request for a pumpkintini recipe. I have a ton of pumpkin recipes if you need an exchange!
