Birthday Results

Hannah was thrilled with all your birthday wishes yesterday. Thank you all so much for taking the time to leave comments, offer advice and extend a happy birthday to my girl. It means a lot to both of us.

And you know, your comments were truly just the tip of the iceberg for making Hannah's birthday a happy one. You see, it has become a family tradition to receive hand knit socks and yesterday I gifted Hannah with these new ones.

The yarn is Claudia's Handpaint and yes, they are from two different dye lots. That's a long boring story and I'm not going into it here but it was totally my fault.

Hannah_birthday_socks2.jpg

I actually thought they'd look a lot different than they do - one is clearly darker than the other. But Hannah says she doesn't mind and I hope she wears them well.

There was one other thing that really made Hannah's day. Tori Amos tickets. Hannah had asked me quite some time ago if she and Jessica (my stepdaughter) could go to this concert together. I told her no and said I didn't think it would be good for she and Jess to go into Boston on their own. Man alive was she mad at me! She complained to Jess and Dale and her friends. It went on for days and it wasn't pretty.

Secretly, though, I had planned all along to get her these tickets. And while I still don't think it's a good idea to send my two daughters into the city alone, I'm planning on remedying that by going in with them. Dale and I will drop them at the show and then go have dinner and hang out and pick them up afterwards. Simple solution.

And a fabulous surprise.

You sneaky Pete! I love pulling off surprises like that ... and it looks as though you've given Hannah the thrill of a lifetime.

You're such a good Mom!!
Hannah's socks a lovely.

Posted by: Karen at September 4, 2007 7:44 AM

Good going!! What a wonderful surprise and how nice you'll get an outing out of it, too. Just be cool and don't go into the show and escort her out like my mom did 40 years ago...geeez. ;-)

Posted by: margene at September 4, 2007 7:52 AM

Hannah (also my daughters name), from one birthday girl to another, I hope you had a great day!

Posted by: Karen at September 4, 2007 8:05 AM

No one can surprise a young lady or keep their feet warm like mom:) heh heh, That's one for the parents!

Posted by: Carol at September 4, 2007 8:25 AM

Look at that face. That's just fantastic. That's the most wonderful kind of gift to give -- that, and socks. Very nice.

Posted by: Vicki at September 4, 2007 8:25 AM

Tori Amos! I'll be chaperone!!!!

Posted by: Mel at September 4, 2007 8:30 AM

I love the element of surprise! You got her but good! Hehehe. Great gifts!

Those last two shots were priceless! Belated birthday wishes from me...the weekend got away from me somehow.

Posted by: Marcia Cooke at September 4, 2007 8:47 AM

boston is easy-peasy. were you really worried about letting them go? or were you just looking for an excuse to go out with your dale ;)

Posted by: maryse at September 4, 2007 8:50 AM

Good one, Carole! That look is priceless.

Posted by: Ann at September 4, 2007 8:50 AM

She looks so absolutely delighted and surprised... good solution, Ma! Wish Hannah a happy belated birthday from me and cherish this fast-moving bit of time while she seems to grow up quicker than ever.

Posted by: Erin at September 4, 2007 9:13 AM

I don't know; I don't think she looks too thrilled with the tickets ;-)

Posted by: Julie at September 4, 2007 9:29 AM

Happy belated birthday to Hannah. She looks thrilled with her Tori Amos tickets. You must have had so much fun watching her open that gift!

Posted by: Danielle at September 4, 2007 9:44 AM

Oh, Hannah's face in those last two photos is priceless!!! It must have been a wonderful moment when she opened that gift!

Lovely socks too. I've used 2 skeins of Claudia's from the same dyelot and had at least that much color variation.

Posted by: Kirsten at September 4, 2007 9:44 AM

She looks beyond thrilled - good job!!! :o))

Posted by: JessaLu at September 4, 2007 9:58 AM

That face is my favorite thing in the whole world! When Bean has that face, it's the greatest!

Good solution to the concert situation. I have a feeling that Dr. Pig and I are going to be going to alot of concerts as Bean gets older.

Posted by: liz at September 4, 2007 10:04 AM

what an absolutely perfect solution - you're so clever. and what a great photo... too bad we don't have sound with these blogs, i bet you could hear her delight a mile away.

Posted by: Teyani at September 4, 2007 10:17 AM

The look on her face is great in that last picture. What a great surprise for her.

Posted by: Hillary at September 4, 2007 10:18 AM

Late Happy Birthday to Hannah!

My DD's is in a month. Going through a similar transformation, though she has lousy taste in music. I *wish* she wanted to go to a Tori Amos concert.

Hannah will start a new trend with those socks. Lovely.

Posted by: Sylvia at September 4, 2007 10:46 AM

She looks so HAPPY! You're so sneaky....

In my family, everyone pretty much knows whenever there's a "big gift" coming . . . because we'll get out the cameras in the hopes of capturing basically exactly the expression you've got there . . . The minute you see camera lenses pointed your way, you KNOW that what's in front of you is going to be oh-so-very worthwhile! (grin)

Posted by: --Deb at September 4, 2007 10:48 AM

Great photos! I think you pulled off that surprise flawlessly. Great solution, too -- everybody wins.

Posted by: kmkat at September 4, 2007 10:59 AM

wicked cool you are a great mom

Posted by: blogless sharon at September 4, 2007 11:18 AM

Awww...hehe. You're such a good mom! I love the look on her face. It's a great solution too. It's things like that, that make her remember the great times. I like the socks by the way. :D I'm making socks like that..I was going to rip them out (seeing that they're too big for me..too many stitches... I guess I wasn't watching my increases on the toe). But..my husband swears he's going to wear them. Funny thing is...they're the same color. I HIGHLY doubt he'll wear them to work.

Posted by: Teresa at September 4, 2007 11:18 AM

I love the socks...very girly! But even more, I love the surprise you gave her, and that last photo is priceless!

Posted by: Leslie at September 4, 2007 11:27 AM

The look on Hannah's face is priceless. Don't you just love it when you surprise them like that? Very cool!

Posted by: Kim at September 4, 2007 11:38 AM

Oh, just LOOK at that face! HA! :-) What an awesome surprise! I bet it was hard to keep that secret to yourself. ;-)

And the socks look fine to me! Maybe the dyelot thing is more apparent in person... but on the screen they look great. And very, very pink, which I always think is a commendable thing in a sock.

Posted by: Beth S. at September 4, 2007 11:39 AM

A great surprise indeed, and how lovely to see it captured in pixels. A belated happy birthday to you, Hannah!

We expect a full report on the excursion, of course. (I notice that you get something cool out of the deal as well, which is as it should be.)

Posted by: Lucia at September 4, 2007 11:53 AM

Belated birthday wishes to Hannah and congrats to her on her excellent taste in music! I've seen Tori three times and it's always a great show. The fans are awesome too; I'm glad to know she's still popular with the "younger" crowd!

Posted by: elizabeth at September 4, 2007 11:57 AM

It's so hard doing that surprise stuff as they get older, although from the look on her face you did just fine :)

Posted by: michelle at September 4, 2007 11:59 AM

What a sneaky and fab mom! Hannah is a very lucky girl with very good taste in music.

Posted by: Cookie at September 4, 2007 12:01 PM

Go Mom! You Rock!! What a cool present (on both counts!)

Posted by: catie at September 4, 2007 12:14 PM

You're such a great mom! One of the major things I still remember when I was 16, is when my parents wouldn't let me attend a concert to see the current hot rock star. I'm sure your daughter will never forget how great you made her birthday by giving her the gift she wanted most.

Posted by: ~Kristie at September 4, 2007 1:13 PM

Oh man, I'm all teary eyed just looking at those two amazing photos of the shear surprise and joy on her face. Nicely done mom, nicely done!

Posted by: Deb at September 4, 2007 1:44 PM

Carole! The look on her face in the last photo say sit all. GREAT shot. And wonderful surprise.

That last photo is going to be treasured forever! It is rare to truly capture the emotion as true as I suspect that photos does! I hope she and Jess enjoy the show!

What a great Mom and what cute pics of your beautiful Hannah...you do realize you're gonna have to lock her in the closet real soon, don't you? :)

Posted by: Debi Leshin at September 4, 2007 3:40 PM

You are a sneaky mom! It is so much fun to surprise them with something really wanted.

The socks do not appear that different to me.
She is a beautiful girl.

Posted by: Norma at September 4, 2007 11:02 PM

What a great treat for Hannah. She really looked surprised. I hope she has a great time at the concert and Mom and Dale have a great idea of dropping them off and bringing them back home. Definitely too young, imo, to go into the city by themselves.

Posted by: Wanda at September 5, 2007 11:02 AM

Oh those pictures of her realizing what you did are priceless!!!

Posted by: scout at September 5, 2007 2:42 PM

LOVE those socks, and the picot edging!!!

TORI AMOS!! LUCKY GIRL!!

Posted by: Kim at September 5, 2007 11:16 PM
