Oscar Night 2007

Last night was Oscar night, a regular holiday at my house. As I've said before, this is MY superbowl. By 6 PM we were ready.

IMG_2394.JPG

We had filled out our ballots.

IMG_2391.JPG

We had champagne and shrimp, candles and bling.

IMG_2399.JPG

We had dressed for the occasion.

I think Ellen Degeneres did a fabulous job as hostess - the best since Billy Crystal, frankly. The dresses went from the sublime - Helen Mirren - to the ridiculous - Penelope Cruz, but that's what makes it so much fun to watch.

As for our predictions, I scored 9, Hannah scored 7, and Dale scored 5. I pride myself on being the real film buff of the family but Dale beat me on Best Picture. I guess he's been paying attention after all!

You know how to have a great time!
Frankly my dear I was bored to tears. The gowns were wonderful to watch but just not enough to hold the attention. My wheel was more fun;-)

Posted by: margene at February 26, 2007 7:46 AM

Looks like fun! I stayed up until the end. Thank goodness that Scorsese won with all of other directors presenting.

Posted by: Kathy at February 26, 2007 7:52 AM

What a fun time. I missed the whole thing- fell asleep putting my youngest to bed.

Posted by: Manise at February 26, 2007 8:02 AM

You know how to do the Oscars right! We watched the preshow. I love seeing the dresses. Penelope Cruz's dress was bad. Nicole Kidman always looks wonderful but this year I found the giant bow to be a distraction.

Posted by: Karen at February 26, 2007 8:08 AM

What a great tradition - love Dale in his tux jacket, and Hannah could give some of the real stars a run for their money. What did you wear??

Posted by: PumpkinMama at February 26, 2007 8:12 AM

How FUN!! I didn't even turn it on because I didn't want the kids to get engrossed in the show and then not go to BED so I could have my peaceful knitting time. heh So I put in Lord of the Rings.

Have a great week Carole! :)

What a fun way to watch the Oscars. I think that Ellen did a great job. She was very funny at times. I think that the best part is often looking at the gowns. Many were fantastic but i hated Nicole Kidman's. What was up with that weird bow thing?

Posted by: Hillary at February 26, 2007 8:35 AM

Wow! Next year I am coming to your house!! Ken is so not a fan of awards shows, but I LOVE them. I like the wine and shrimp touch....nice!

Posted by: Kim at February 26, 2007 8:41 AM

Is that an AC/DC shirt under Dale's jacket? Hilarious!

I tohught Ellen was fantastic, she did a great job. And Scorsese's win was the best part!

Posted by: Cheryl at February 26, 2007 8:43 AM

Wait, where's the picture of your outfit?! ;)

Posted by: Chris at February 26, 2007 8:45 AM

I have to say that this was one of the most boring Oscar ceremonies in years. And Peter O'Toole should have won. We all know that after a point, half these awards aren't so much for that particular movie as for your body of work. If they can give the best director nod to Marty Scorcese for The Departed (not even close to being his best film), then they should extend it to O'Toole who is now a shameful 0 for 8. Yes, I know they gave him an honorary award but the man is brilliant and deserves to win one himself.

Posted by: liz at February 26, 2007 8:45 AM

What a fun way to watch! What did YOU wear??

Posted by: Vicki at February 26, 2007 9:07 AM

The best part is Dale's AC/DC t-shirt under his tux jacket. Looks like a fun party!

Posted by: Liz K. at February 26, 2007 9:08 AM

Didn't watch...but it sure looks like you had fun. :)

Posted by: Kathleen at February 26, 2007 9:26 AM

i love that you guys dressed up and busted out the bubbly!

Posted by: amanda at February 26, 2007 9:27 AM

Oh what fun! I love Dale's t-shirt, it really makes the tux!

Posted by: Robin at February 26, 2007 9:28 AM

didn't watch either. went to visit my niece at the hospital (she's ok) and didn't get home until 9. but it certainly looks like you guys had fun.

Posted by: maryse at February 26, 2007 9:29 AM

Dale is now officially my Dream Man in his AC/DC t-shirt and tux jacket. Looks like you guys had fun! I didn't even bother watching since I haven't seen any of the movies :(

Posted by: Martha at February 26, 2007 9:36 AM

What fun! I love watching it too. I would have gotten a pretty high score but wouldn't have gotten Alan Arkin or Departed for best picture. Otherwise I got them all!

Posted by: scoutj at February 26, 2007 9:37 AM

What a great idea, Carole! Our problem is that we can never stay up late enough to see it through to the finish. Everything looked so festive. This is a great way to add something to the winter blahs.

So did you knit like crazy while watching?

Posted by: Donna at February 26, 2007 9:43 AM

What a great idea! It looks like you guys had a ball.

Posted by: Carolyn at February 26, 2007 9:53 AM

Sounds like a good time. I want to see what you wore.

Posted by: Julie at February 26, 2007 10:00 AM

Sounds like a fun night!

Posted by: Kelly at February 26, 2007 10:21 AM

What a great tradition!

And I'm going to join the masses: what did you wear??? :-)

Posted by: Angelia at February 26, 2007 10:24 AM

Oh, I love me a man in a tux and an AC/DC t-shirt. Not to mention shrimp and champagne. You really know how to throw a party!

Posted by: kmkat at February 26, 2007 11:12 AM

Do I see Martini's to celebrate? The shrimp looks wonderful!

Posted by: Cindy D at February 26, 2007 11:20 AM

I guess that beats my mismatched fluffy socks and snowflake flannel pajama bottoms! :-)

Posted by: Sue at February 26, 2007 11:23 AM

The girls and I dressed up, too, and oldest & I managed to stay awake to the bitter end. I loved the gowns, was a little sick of the dance/shadow thing and endless reels of film clips by the end - it wasn't the winners' fault that the show ran over by an hour, that's clear.

Posted by: Liz (the crazed weasel) at February 26, 2007 11:40 AM

You do it right! Guess that means you actually saw all the films??? Guess I am shamed to say that we are waiting on most to get to Netflix.

The gowns this year deserved a lot more attention than they were getting. I sort of like the morning after when they really go to town showing them.

Posted by: Judy at February 26, 2007 11:40 AM

Sounds like fun! I got my butt kicked in the big Oscar pool at the party I attended -- the winner got 14 out of 20 correct.

I also really enjoyed Ellen -- I think she's hilarious -- and I just can't understand why most critics panned her. They panned John Stewart, too, whom I loved. I guess I just have low standards?

Posted by: Rachel at February 26, 2007 11:44 AM

I never watch the Oscars, but as to sartorial splendor I'll bet Hannah put them all in the shade.

Posted by: Lucia at February 26, 2007 11:52 AM

I watched most of it ... fell asleep right after Helen Mirren won her award, and woke up to late-night news (bleh).

Dale is really working that tux jacket, and Hannah is (as usual) lovely. What did you wear?

Posted by: Ruth at February 26, 2007 12:55 PM

I enjoyed the awards. But truthfully, I think either of the women from Babel should have won instead of Jennifer Hudson.

Posted by: Amy at February 26, 2007 2:06 PM

You always have such great ideas! What a wonderful & fun way to spend the evening. I'll have to remember that for next year.

Posted by: ~Kristie at February 26, 2007 4:05 PM

OH my gosh how cute are you all???? That is so neat that you get dressed up and everything :-)
I loved it last night - I agree - Ellen was fantastic.

Posted by: Esther at February 26, 2007 4:08 PM

That's fantastic! Don't mind if I steal your idea too! Now where can I find a red carpet...

Posted by: Heather at February 26, 2007 4:19 PM

It was fun, but unpredictable. Loved the dresses, the hair, the diamonds. Good eyecandy.

Posted by: Laurie at February 26, 2007 4:34 PM

That looks like so much fun! I completely missed the awards (I decided my time was better spent getting ahead in my homework even thought I would rather have been watching) but maybe next year I can talk my roommates into dressing up...

Posted by: elizabeth at February 26, 2007 5:28 PM

what did you think of nicole kidman's dress? it frightened me...

i LOVED jada pinkett smith's on her, though. gorgeous. :)

Posted by: cecily at February 26, 2007 5:53 PM

I liked Penelope Cruz's dress!

Posted by: Hannah at February 26, 2007 6:21 PM

Oh My God. You are awesome! :) AND. I have that candleholder. From Sweden, as if I had to say it!
xoxo

Posted by: sandy at February 26, 2007 6:27 PM

LOVE that you dress for it! I'm still drooling over Cate Blanchett's dress. Gwyneth Paltrow looked amazing, too. And Reese Witherspoon?? So, so glam. I would LOVE a chance to wear something like that . . . you know, if I had the figure for it! (grin)

Posted by: --Deb at February 26, 2007 6:39 PM

I agree - I thought Ellen did a terrific job, and I'm not generally a fan of hers. And Helen Mirren's dress was *gorgeous*.

What a fun way to do Oscar night :)

Posted by: Jackie at February 26, 2007 8:58 PM

I was thinking of you last night and how this is one of your favorite holidays:) I agree about Ellen Degeneres and especially liked her conning Clint Eastwood into a photo for her My Space page!

Posted by: Birdsong at February 26, 2007 9:10 PM

Hannah looks prettier than any star on the red carpet and I LOVE that Dale wore a tux but where's your outfit missy?

Posted by: Debi at February 26, 2007 9:14 PM

Great idea to make the Oscars a fun night!

Posted by: Carol at February 26, 2007 9:34 PM

Wow. You definitely know how to make it an event (Ed and I sat in bed and watched). I agree with you about Ellen, she was great - definitely the best host since Billy.

Posted by: Cynthia at February 26, 2007 11:18 PM

Is Dale wearing an AC/DC shirt under his tux jacket? Priceless! ;o)

We lost interest early...I'm sorry we have no attention span to speak of :o(

Posted by: JessaLu at February 27, 2007 12:12 AM

You guys are too funny. I love it!

Posted by: Suzanne at February 27, 2007 12:26 AM

You guys really do know how to go have a good time in your house. I love it!

Posted by: elisa at February 27, 2007 9:10 AM

Oooo, what fun! I always forget when the various award shows and stuff are happening so I missed them.

Posted by: Kristi aka Fiber Fool at February 27, 2007 12:39 PM

What a fun tradition! I stopped watching the Oscars about when I stopped going to the movie theatres, but I did do a little surfing this morning to see some of the outfits.

Posted by: Monica at February 27, 2007 9:56 PM

love the bling! looks like a fun night was had at your house.

Posted by: Teyani at February 28, 2007 1:33 PM

Oh, gosh, I remember this from last year - It is just so cool that you dress up! All you need is a red carpet!!!!
Hannah looks gorgeous!

Posted by: christine at February 28, 2007 2:43 PM

Like the ballot idea, didn't think of that. I also like the after show, the critiquing of the gowns.
