Christmas Knitting

If you've been around this blog for a while you'll know that I don't knit for Christmas. I used to, but then I smartened up. I gifted too many things that went unappreciated and my knitting time is way too precious to knit for people who don't "get" what it means to receive something hand knit. So, I save my hand knits for birthdays. And only for the birthdays of those who get it.

The nice thing about this is that when Christmas rolls around, I'm the one who winds up with new socks.

Vesper Sock Yarn. Peaks 'n Valleys pattern from Knit Socks. This makes my 18th pair of completed socks in 2006.

Happy Christmas to me, me, me.

Very cheery socks! They almost look like knee socks, but it's probably a photo illusion. 18 pairs this year? *thud*

18 pairs this year! Holy cow. I live in awe. Those socks are just too cute. Happy Holidays to you.

Posted by: Annie at December 20, 2006 7:12 AM

I also don't do Christmas knitting and for all the reasons you state. However, you seem to stay calm about the entire matter just stating your case, I on the other hand become hostile and shrill. When asked, I am going to channel your words! Great socks - you deserve them!

Posted by: ann at December 20, 2006 7:12 AM

LOVE the socks! Those are absolutely adorable & the perfect present! I can't believe you've made 18 pairs of socks this year .. WOW!

Posted by: ~Kristie at December 20, 2006 7:30 AM

beautiful socks. i don't knit for christmas either unless i get a specific request.

Posted by: maryse at December 20, 2006 7:31 AM

Oh nice socks!! (And cute shoes too!) I can't believe you've knit 18 pair of socks. That is so impressive.
I think you've got a great plan there for knitting gifts. I knit something for my mother for Christmas and no one else.

Posted by: Karen at December 20, 2006 7:35 AM

18 pairs...holy smoke! Love the colors.

Posted by: Kathleen at December 20, 2006 7:39 AM

I LOVE those socks!!! You are a smart woman. I very rarely knit for other people for the same reasons you mention. 2 of my kids love and will live in my handknits (and they get them) and the other 3 scoff because they are not from Abercrombe or the like.

18 pairs, girl I am very impressed! That magic loop is getting pulled out again for sure here!

Posted by: Kim at December 20, 2006 7:45 AM

Lovely gift to yourself...nothing better than warm feet on Christmas morning...well, maybe diamonds.

Posted by: margene at December 20, 2006 7:47 AM

Great socks! Love the colors.

Posted by: Julie at December 20, 2006 7:56 AM

Very nice! 18 is a respectable number of socks in a year - you busy bee.

Posted by: PumpkinMama at December 20, 2006 8:07 AM

Very wise. I'm with you! and the socks are definitely a good treat for someone who would appreciate them. Like, say, YOU!

Posted by: Amy at December 20, 2006 8:13 AM

Love those socks! You've got me beat by several on socks!
I'm with you on knitting only for those who appreciate it...only thing is almost everyone in my family appreciates it!
During those *lean years* the only way I could give gifts was to make them, later I tried to "buy" gifts and everyone was a little upset they didn't get the homemade item!
This year is the "Sock Christmas"...I hope they like them!

Posted by: Robin at December 20, 2006 8:22 AM

Very nice. I bought that book because I saw all of your versions of this sock pattern. I am hoping to try it soon. There are some other cute patterns in there as well.

Posted by: Lolly at December 20, 2006 8:26 AM

Stripey fun!!

Posted by: Chris at December 20, 2006 8:34 AM

I LOVE them! So cheery and so you! I am wrapping up my teacher knitting (I know --just in time!)

Posted by: Kathy at December 20, 2006 8:36 AM

I LOVE yer socks Lady! So neato.

I'm with you on the xmas knitting! Besides, isn't there enough other things to stress about during the holidays besides knitting deadlines? Sure thing babe. :)

Posted by: heather at December 20, 2006 8:37 AM

Beautiful socks! And a great colorway too!

Posted by: Karen at December 20, 2006 8:51 AM

Carole, I am with you about the Christmas knits. I generally don't knit without a request.

Those are some excellent socks. Love me some Vesper.

Posted by: Liz K. at December 20, 2006 9:07 AM

What better recipient for such a beautiful pair of socks? happy Christmas to you, you, you indeed!

Posted by: Chris at December 20, 2006 9:11 AM

Happy Christmas to you, indeed. They look great!! I'm totally in awe of 18 pairs, too. How many of those were gifts and how many for you?

Posted by: Vicki at December 20, 2006 9:11 AM

I love those socks. The colors are just gorgeous!

Posted by: Susan at December 20, 2006 10:18 AM

I love the colorway! That pattern (and those feet) suit them well.

Posted by: Bookish Wendy at December 20, 2006 10:20 AM

Wow, 18 pairs of socks in a year -- I'm impressed. I totally agree with you about knitting for gifts. Except for my daughter I have never given a pair of hand knitted socks for anyone - because of the reasons you stated.
Once I found some beautiful homespun yarn that screamed 'teenager'so I bought it and knitted my 14 year-old niece a small envelope purse and matching hat and scarf for her birthday. I never received a thank you plus I learned second-hand that her mother felt I was just spending time on a hobby and passing off what I made as a birthday gift. Never again.

Posted by: sue at December 20, 2006 10:44 AM

Those socks look great. Enjoy them! This is the first year that I really did a lot of holiday knitting. I hope that I don't regret it.

Posted by: hillary at December 20, 2006 10:53 AM

The socks look fabulous! I'm with you on the gift knitting -- my time is far too precious!

Posted by: amanda at December 20, 2006 11:00 AM

I love the stripes of that pattern. I really need to stop knitting for Christmas and just use all that time for me knitting.

Posted by: Mindy at December 20, 2006 11:05 AM

Love the socks! Now there's a yarn I haven't tried, Vesper. Not sure how that has escaped my clutches :)

I'm totally with you on the knitting for others. I've spent too much time knitting for those who don't appreciate it. Its far too precious to me to let that happen, so unless someone asks for something I don't knit gifts for others (except the teacher gift).

Posted by: Risa at December 20, 2006 11:05 AM

Those are great!

18 pairs! That's NUTS!

Posted by: scoutj at December 20, 2006 11:07 AM

Great socks!!! I knit for very few people - actually only one person - she is a friend and she "gets it". I do charity knitting - because I think in my mind that whoever gets a scarf that I have knit "gets" it....So far I only do scarfs!

I intend to replace all my store bought socks with my own hand knit socks!

Posted by: Sara at December 20, 2006 11:18 AM

Oh, those are great socks! I love the stripes!

Posted by: Kristi aka Fiber Fool at December 20, 2006 11:22 AM

18 pairs of socks? Wow. The things you've said about sock yarn in the past are starting to make more sense. I know you posted about your goal being one a month and that you beat it, but I'm slow, and it's just starting to sink in.

Those are such great colors - fun and funky and just a great combo!

Posted by: Jackie at December 20, 2006 11:32 AM

Love!

Well done, Carole. They look so warm and comfy.

Posted by: Cookie at December 20, 2006 11:54 AM

VERY nice shoes/clogs that you have there, too. I totally get what you are saying about not gifting knitting to those who don't get it about hand knitting. And your socks are very cool.

Posted by: Dave Daniels at December 20, 2006 12:57 PM

Love the socks. What colorway is that? I think I have a skein of whatever it is.

I completely get what you're saying about gift knitting. My new rule ... no thank you note, No More Handknits For You.

Posted by: Ruth at December 20, 2006 1:04 PM

18 pairs! That's three socks per month! Impressive. And I know some of them must have been man-socks, too, which is more impressive still.

Think you can beat that next year?... ;-)

Posted by: Beth S. at December 20, 2006 1:31 PM

Yeah for you! Those are lovely socks for you!!!
Next year, no xmas knitting for me. I swear.

Posted by: christine at December 20, 2006 1:42 PM

Yay Christmas socks! 18 pairs this year, wow!

Posted by: Monica at December 20, 2006 1:58 PM

Twins! How cool is that?

Posted by: Carol at December 20, 2006 2:10 PM

18 pair?! Wow! Those are fabulous. I just received my Christmas sock yarn - not in time to knit holiday socks. Perhaps a good summer project.

Posted by: Rebecca at December 20, 2006 2:16 PM

Love the socks! I'm the same way, I do very little gift knitting for Christmas.

Posted by: Jen at December 20, 2006 3:18 PM

Yes! I smartened up a little bit when lovely but clueless MIL washed and felted a scarf. After the cat peed on it. I still do it, but only for those who I think "get it".

Posted by: Emily at December 20, 2006 9:01 PM

42 comments! Coooooool!! I haven't read them but I bet 42 people said Great socks - but where'd ya get those SHOES!? Love the shoes! :)

Posted by: Laura at December 20, 2006 9:34 PM

Lovely! And very smart strategizing.

Posted by: Laurie at December 20, 2006 9:36 PM

Wow Carole! I just love these! Good idea re: the Xmas gifts. I've toiled for naught too many times also.

Posted by: Joy at December 20, 2006 10:55 PM

Those socks should brighten up any winter day and keep your tooties warm as well! Good on the sock production level; you are a Goddess.

Posted by: Birdsong at December 20, 2006 11:40 PM

lovely new socks Carole. 18 pairs - wow. that's alot... and that doesn't even include all the scarves, shawls etc. that you also made. rock on girlfriend.

Posted by: Teyani at December 21, 2006 10:08 AM

those are great carole! i love to knit for christmas, even when i get tired. i'm teaching the little ones in the family to love and appreciate all the handmade gifts, the way my gram and mom taught us to do!

Posted by: anne at December 21, 2006 4:50 PM

Beautiful sockage! What a great gift ;o)

Posted by: JessaLu at December 21, 2006 11:19 PM

Happy Christmas to you too! Those socks are v.v. cute and best of all, the recipient appreciates them. ;)
