The Race Is On
Picture me, on Friday, innocently reading blogs and leaving comments. You know, like I do every day. So, I'm reading and reading and I come to the latest post at Seed Stitch. And Cheryl, like Julia and Beth, is all excited about the release of Anne's Wing of the Moth pattern. Cheryl says she wants to knit this pattern as a race to see who can finish it first. I, again innocently, leave a comment about how I'm planning on knitting this shawl but I need to finish Miriam's Adamas shawl first. Count me in for the knitting but not for the race, says I. And do you know what she did? Here's a hint.
Yup. She threw down the gauntlet. She called me out. Here's what she said, exactly:
Oh no, you're not getting out of this that easily! You're in, consider yourself raced.
Ahem. I am not one to back down from a challenge. Then again, I have my rules. And one of my rules is only one lace project on the needles at a time. The race is on but the race is to finish Adamas before I start Wing of the Moth. Here's Adamas in her current state.
I have 5 more repeats of the main pattern before I switch to the edging. How long do you think this is going to take me to finish knitting? Leave your guess in the comments by Friday, August 25, 2006 at 11:00 pm EST and you'lll be entered into a drawing for this skein of lace weight yarn - so you can make your very own Wing of the Moth Shawl.
Merino Lace, made in Italy for Skacel Collection. 1375 yds.
You don't have to be right about when I'll finish to win. Anyone who guesses in the comments will be entered and I'll randomly select a name. This is an excellent chance to de-lurk, all you lurkers. Just sayin.
The race (and the contest!) is on!

You got served, beeotch!! So glad you're in .
And I'm guessing you have Adamas done by Sunday, around 11am.
Posted by: Cheryl at August 21, 2006 7:14 AM
I think you like the idea of the challenge, so I'm guessing you hurry right through the Adamas, and join the fun of Wing of the Moth by Friday.
Posted by: Kirsten at August 21, 2006 7:24 AM
Well, with the gauntlet thrown down, the pressure is really on. I think you'll finish on Saturday. :) I can't wait to see the FO pic.
Posted by: Karen at August 21, 2006 7:30 AM
Adamas is lovely. She looks like a fun knit so you'll have no problem working on her every spare minute but sadly you have a job so knitting with be interupted for that. I guess you'll have a knit-a-thon beginning Friday evening and you'll be done Sunday afternoon.
Posted by: Karen at August 21, 2006 7:51 AM
Hmmm, publically challenged, internally motivated - I'm guessing Adamas will be finished Thursday by 10 pm. Have fun!!
Posted by: Chris at August 21, 2006 7:51 AM
10 pm, August 30th - and still well before I'll even start my Adamas!
Posted by: Chris at August 21, 2006 8:02 AM
My guess? Yesterday;-)
Posted by: margene at August 21, 2006 8:02 AM
i'm thinking sunday 4pm.
Posted by: maryse at August 21, 2006 8:07 AM
Delurking! You'll finish Adamas on Saturday at 11 AM.
Posted by: Elizabeth at August 21, 2006 8:19 AM
I've got the Wing of the Moth Pattern too! But I am definitely not racing. And I'm thinking you will finish Adamas Thursday at 8:45pm!
Posted by: Leah at August 21, 2006 8:30 AM
Oooh - I don't know, let's say Sunday morning, 1am!!
Posted by: Anne at August 21, 2006 8:32 AM
Who knew that quiet, calm Cheryl was such a troublemaker?! I'm guessing you'll have Adamas done by Saturday morning.
Posted by: PumpkinMama at August 21, 2006 8:32 AM
Hmm, that's an a$$-kick if I've ever heard one! ;-) (But a good, friendly, and potentially fun kick in the a$$.) I say 7 days for you to finish. Have fun.
Posted by: Joanne at August 21, 2006 8:34 AM
My guess is you've probably done a few repeats already last night and you'll be finished in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
Posted by: Manise at August 21, 2006 8:36 AM
Oh, right, like I could resist that merino laceweight. I say you finish the Adamas Friday at 1:30 am, just as the Red Sox are losing a 19-inning game by bobbling an easy grounder. (Why they still bother I do not know.)
Posted by: Lucia at August 21, 2006 8:41 AM
August 27th
2:34 am
:o)
Posted by: trek at August 21, 2006 8:44 AM
I think you'll finish Friday evening. Love the color!
Posted by: Susan at August 21, 2006 8:44 AM
I will guess Friday at 11pm.
Posted by: Joan at August 21, 2006 8:47 AM
Adamas is in the wings for me too. I'm finishing my clapotis first. I'm going to say, my birthday, Wednesday 8-23, (I know, optimistic) at 10:22 PM. I can't wait to see it finished!
Posted by: Lisa C in TN at August 21, 2006 9:13 AM
Lisa stole my answer but I'm still going to say Wednesday. 2.30am Wednesday morning. The wee sma's. Because I know there are a couple of people who have already started and you're not going to stand still for that one!
What yarn are you going to use for Moth? I love that pattern but I'm torn on yarn choices. And no, I don't have enough of the Kidlin Pixie.
Posted by: liz at August 21, 2006 9:25 AM
Hrm, I'd say you'll have it done by this Sunday evening (8/27). I can't wait to see it blocked =)
Posted by: Jes at August 21, 2006 9:28 AM
I like how, in pay-it-forward fashion, throw down the gauntlet to the lurkers. NICE!
Thursday, August 24 at 10:07pm.
Posted by: kip at August 21, 2006 9:28 AM
I think you'll work every spare minute you have. I have no idea how many rows in a repeat, but I'm going to say 1 day per repeat and 1 day for the edge. So, my guess is Saturday.
Posted by: Julie at August 21, 2006 9:32 AM
You will finish in four days - which puts it at Friday! good luck!!
Posted by: ann at August 21, 2006 9:40 AM
That Adamas Shawl is beautiful, and I'm guessing you'll finish it late Sunday afternoon with enough time to spare so's you can start the other one that night. :)
Posted by: maggie at August 21, 2006 9:40 AM
I think you'll be finished by Tuesday night.
Posted by: Paula at August 21, 2006 9:41 AM
I'm going for Sunday afternoon. Good Luck
Posted by: Carla at August 21, 2006 9:42 AM
I think moth-lust will drive you to finish FAST! You'll be done by the weekend at the latest. Let's say Saturday afternoon. :-)
Posted by: Beth S. at August 21, 2006 9:48 AM
I'm guessing... Thursday evening. Around 7:30. That way on Friday when you announce the winner you can show the FO as well.
Posted by: Just A Knit Wit at August 21, 2006 9:51 AM
Carole I love your blog, always so interesting and funny! I am de-lurking just for you! I think you'll finish Adamas by Saturday at 2:43 pm. Good luck!
Posted by: Kristine at August 21, 2006 9:53 AM
throwing down the gaunlet - for real! whoa. great photo .
best guess??? August 27th ('cause that's a whole mother-lode of stitches!)
Posted by: Teyani at August 21, 2006 10:14 AM
I love how you just happened to have a gauntlet for illustrative purposes! I am not going to guess, because I.do.not.want.any.more yarn.
Posted by: Norma at August 21, 2006 10:25 AM
I see TWO gauntlets -- does that mean it's a double-dare? Or has someone else thrown THEIR gauntlet into the ring?
; )
Oh my goodness, I've never really knit lace, so I haven't a clue about how long this is going to take you. I'll say you'll be finished and ready-to-block by bedtime on Wednesday.
Wait! What's that? Is that another gauntlet? ; )
Posted by: Vicki at August 21, 2006 10:28 AM
I'll say Sunday, 7:00 pm.
Posted by: --Deb at August 21, 2006 10:32 AM
Wow you have been thrown a challenge! I say you will finish Adamas on Wednesday evening! Cause you are anxious not to be left behind!!:)
Posted by: Susanne at August 21, 2006 10:36 AM
Late Saturday night -
she's a beaut:)
Posted by: deni at August 21, 2006 10:38 AM

Posted by: Cayli at August 21, 2006 10:44 AM
Man....these guys are rough! I'm giving you till September 1st!
Posted by: V at August 21, 2006 11:02 AM
Dude. Who can lurk around here? I mean really! Tomatoes, mojitos, Native Americans wearing lace.....and then? Then you have to throw in a contest. For purple laceweight even.
Hmmmm.....let's see.....5 repeats, then edging, tap, tap, tap.....I'm betting you finish in the wee hours of Sunday AM after staying up all night Saturday night just for that purpose so that you can cast on Sunday morning. Because we all know how important that Monday morning post is, yes?
Oh, someone else thinks Sunday morning too, eh? OK, how about.....3:48 AM 8/27?
Posted by: Kellee at August 21, 2006 11:17 AM
I'm gonna go with Tues 8/29. 5 repeats is a lot, but you're more focused than I am so I know you can do it.
Posted by: Monica at August 21, 2006 11:23 AM
Wow. Whatself control not to cast on right away!
I vote for Friday night, 11 PM.
Posted by: Cece at August 21, 2006 11:46 AM
Thursday at noon. You'd better knit fast!
Posted by: Nicole at August 21, 2006 12:00 PM
Now, you know that I am NO lurker, but I'm gonna play. You will finish on Sunday, August 27th at the conclusion of 60 minutes. Now, get knitting.
Posted by: christine at August 21, 2006 12:00 PM
I'll guess Wednesday 8/30/06. I'm working on the same shawl and I'll be done by Saturday ..... sometime in 2007.
Posted by: Diane at August 21, 2006 12:01 PM
Well, no one can ignore a thrown gauntlet.
Now, what I DON'T know is how long it took you get as far as you have on Adamas. Then again, you haven't been knitting on a deadline, so perhaps you'll go faster now that you have a challenge. Hmmmmm.
I say you'll finish Saturday night. Now, what are you doing reading comments? Go knit!!
Posted by: Ruth at August 21, 2006 12:20 PM
A needles duel--how exciting. I'll say you finish Adamas by Friday evening...maybe around 9pm. Chug along, chug along :)
Posted by: Isela at August 21, 2006 12:33 PM
Wednesday 8/23 9:45 pm.
I vote we turn this Wings of the Moth thing into a North Shore v. South Shore shawl-off. South Shore! South Shore! Gooooooo, Carole!
Posted by: Martha at August 21, 2006 12:35 PM
I'm guessing you'll finish Thursday evening - the others are off and running after all!
Posted by: Sara at August 21, 2006 12:39 PM

Posted by: hillary at August 21, 2006 12:42 PM

Enjoy! Good Luck!
A beautiful skein too Love the purple!
Posted by: Michelle at August 21, 2006 1:02 PM
I'm going to guess that you'll finish BEFORE your 8/25 entry deadline...I'm thinking you finish by Friday at 10pm.
And hoo-boy, this is going to be fun to watch.
Posted by: elisa at August 21, 2006 1:06 PM
Ok, delurking here to guess that you'll finish the Adamas shawl on Saturday afternoon. I think the Wings of the Moth shawl is gorgeous, but don't have enough lace weight in my stash to get going on one right yet. And then there is the whole time issue...
Posted by: Rachel at August 21, 2006 1:27 PM
Delurking... I think you'll finish Adamas on Sunday at 12:01 am. (Lace has a way of making me stay up late to finish!)
Posted by: Flan at August 21, 2006 1:34 PM
I'm completely going to enjoy watching you Moth racers!
I think you'll knit day and night and every stolen moment in between and become a Moth racer Saturday morning, bleary-eyed from staying awake so long finishing Adamas.
Posted by: Beth at August 21, 2006 1:48 PM
If I were you, I'd love to start a new lace project on Labour Day ... so my guess is you'd finish by August 31.

I'll say Wednesday evening at 11:30 p.m.!
Posted by: Wanda at August 21, 2006 1:51 PM

Posted by: I.d.d.a. at August 21, 2006 2:35 PM
I'm going to guess Friday, approximately one day for each repeat, plus a day for the edging. Then minus one day, because I think you'll pour on the juice at the end!
Posted by: Emily at August 21, 2006 2:37 PM
10.10 friday night :)

Posted by: anne at August 21, 2006 4:14 PM
I too would like to make a wing of the moth shawl, but I think I'm better off starting with something less complex.
Oh .. the contest. Umm ... How about August 30th, at noon. :)

Adamas sure is pretty! My guess is Friday.
Posted by: Kelly at August 21, 2006 7:11 PM
Yikes! Are you sure you're feeling all right? Not delusional or anything? Wing of the Moth sure looks pretty but arggh, the ripping I would do if I were under a deadline because of all the mistakes I'd make.
My guess for Adamas: August 31st, 8 pm. (You'll probably finish way before then; I'm projecting since I'm such a slow lace knitter.)
Posted by: BigAlice at August 21, 2006 7:24 PM
Funny how the gauntlet is thrown at you, so you throw it back at us lurkers! But anything for some laceweight...drool...
I think you'll finish this Wednesday (8/23) at 8:07am.
